####Golden Week Holiday
NYU Shanghai students took a break from their studies during the first week of October to celebrate the national Chinese holiday known as Golden Week. The week kicks off with National Day on Oct. 1 to celebrate the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Golden Week is a peak time for Chinese tourism, and this year NYU Shanghai students joined
589 million others travelling around China and Asia.
####Dumpling Fest Comes to Campus
Organized by the Student Government Events Committee, 10,000 dumplings from around the world came to NYUSH’s cafeteria. The event is modeled after NYU New York’s Strawberry Festival, but with a Chinese twist. Hundreds of students attended the event to get free samples of dumplings such as Chinese zongzi, pan-fried dumplings, tangyuan, mochi, samosas and more. Games and activities like dumpling-pong — which is like beer pong, but tastes better — along with lessons in how to make Chinese dumplings and sales of the ever-popular dumpling pillows kept the crowds busy.
####NYU Shanghai Investigated by Shanghai Government
Members of NYUSH’s student community were
invited to discuss the school’s progress with officials from the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. As NYUSH is now a complete campus with all four classes, the officials completed a routine assessment to determine where the university is now and how we should move forward in the future. Designed differently from other Chinese and American universities, matters like NYUSH’s endowment and student satisfaction were considered carefully by SMEC officials. While the government assessment did trigger
shut-down rumors, in the end the officials appeared impressed with the school’s students and programs.
####Study Away Re-Entry Conference Hosted for Senior Class
NYUSH hosted a
Study Away Re-Entry Conference for the returning Class of 2017. With the majority of them having spent a year abroad, NYUSH was eager to help the students process their study away experience and readjust to life in Shanghai. At the conference, students shared their stories from different sites and discussed questions about how they might sell their experience to employers, internship experience and personal development. The session ended by looking toward the future, as seniors were asked to consider fellowships, gap years and their future plans.
####Delusional Crime and Punishment in NYU Shanghai
On Oct. 17, new media artist Lu Yang will open her new
exhibition, LuYang Delusional Crime and Punishment, at the NYU Shanghai Art Gallery. The exhibition was inspired by Lu Yang’s experience talking with neuroscientists at the Computational and Cognitive Neuroscience Summer School hosted by NYUSH. The exhibition will feature video installations, highlighting Lu Yang’s media art expertise. Her work has previously been exhibited in Beijing, Moscow, Venice, Istanbul, Fukuoka and Gwangju.
