On Feb. 14, Student Government General Assembly focused on three topics: reconstruction of Student Government, discussion related to water safety and discussion related to the Health and Wellness Center.
With respect to restructuring Student Government, the main concern was how to achieve full student representation. Global Vice President Samia Ahmed explained the preliminary proposal. The Executive Board suggested a senatorial system in which student representatives across all groups on campus will participate. Ahmed highlighted that this proposal is flexible and subject to change. The proposal underwent a vote of confidence at the GA. The decision to restructure was approved by the attendees with eight students for the proposal and one student against it. Consequently, a taskforce will be formed in order to consider the new structure and draft a new proposal. Students were invited to reach out to members of the Executive Board if they are interested in joining the taskforce.
On the subject of water safety, Terence Monahan, director of Environmental Health and Safety, was invited to speak. He noted that the committee is taking random samples of water from campus each month to ensure water cleanliness. He clarified that the water fountains are clean and usable.
Finally, students were invited to raise concerns regarding Health and Wellness. However, Officer of Communications Jules Bello said that since no representative from Health and Wellness could attend the GA, the discussion will be one-sided and should be postponed. Student Government President Farah Shammout agreed that the discussion should be postponed until the Executive Board meets with Health and Wellness.
