Tired of Marketplace tamaki rolls and makis from Amishi Mishi? Wondering when the sushi place on campus is going to open? Sushi lovers of NYU Abu Dhabi can now satisfy their palates at Aquarium, a seafood restaurant located on Yas Island.
The eatery overlooks Yas Marina, offering a decent view at night, and the outdoor terrace option makes for great seating during the cooler months. Its location near other restaurants and shisha cafes provides many dessert and activity options for later. If the cab fare to Yas Island seems expensive, students can take advantage of the 5:15 p.m. or 7:10 p.m. shuttles that go to Yas Mall from Saadiyat Campus, and then take the taxi from there.
Once inside, visitors can take in the underwater-like ambiance of the restaurant. The dim blue lights of candles on each table provide an intimate atmosphere. Gigantic fish tanks double as partitions and a wooden archway built to resemble the head of a boat amplifies the marine theme. A catch of the day stand assures customers of the freshness of the fish and helps them choose exactly what they want. Aquarium is not a family restaurant, but more of a place for a quiet get-together.
The menu at Aquarium is pricey, but their weekly Sushi Nights are a highlight of the restaurant and definitely something to check out. This event is perfect for those who want great seafood on a budget. Every Sunday, the restaurant offers an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet at 99 AED per person. The buffet setting does not affect the quality of the food. An assortment of rolls, sushi and sashimi are offered. Spicy tuna and salmon rolls seem to be a favorite; a more exotic dish to try out is the calamari sashimi.
Though Aquarium may not be a hot spot for vegetarians, some vegetarian options are still offered; tamago, or egg, sushi and sweet potato rolls are delicious even for the non-vegetarian palate. The hot miso soup counter with tofu and leek provides a delightful contrast to the cold plates and are sure to warm you up.
The waiters are friendly and helpful; photographers are occasionally around to take pictures of the visitors to upload onto their Facebook page. Wi-Fi is provided as well. If you are looking for a quality sushi restaurant without dipping too low into funds, Aquarium is the place for you.
