The Battle of the Bands at NYU Abu Dhabi is not just an event — it is a phenomenon. A crescendo of talent, energy, and artistic passion, it has become a defining tradition since its
debut in 2017. The brainchild of Professor Matteo Marciano and Zain Mustafa, this annual showdown has grown into a cornerstone of campus culture, celebrating its eighth edition this year. Held under the glittering night sky at the East Plaza, the event featured 11 beautiful performances, each one showcasing the remarkable creativity and musical prowess of the musicians.
The featured artists were both members of the NYUAD community and people from around the UAE. For so many people of different backgrounds to come together and create magic on the stage only proves the power of music to unite and bring joy to any- and everybody. While most of the audience might have expected a full rock festival, this year’s Battle of the Bands went beyond genres and definitions. Each performance was in a different genre, spanning from heavy metal to musical-theater-inspired jazz, from improvised fusion to pop, and many more. All performers truly put their souls into the music and fought to win over the audience’s hearts since, once again, cheers from the audience were a key component to winning the coveted prize: an EP produced by NYUAD’s Gazellian Records for the first place and a single for the second place winner.
This year’s edition had its own twist of excitement. With the beloved faculty band “What the Faculty” on sabbatical, a new ensemble, “Dads in Denial,” took the stage. Comprising faculty, alumni, and members of the admissions office, their performance added a fresh and dynamic layer to the night.
The energy at Battle of the Bands was palpable as the performers brought everything from poignant original pieces to electrifying covers, uniting a diverse audience in the shared rhythm of music. More than just a competition, Battle of the Bands proved once again to be a celebration of artistry, camaraderie, and the unifying power of sound, cementing its place as one of the most anticipated nights on the NYUAD calendar.
