Women’s History Month is observed each year during March in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom. The initiative was kickstarted in 1987 and has been an annual occurrence since. The idea of dedicating March to the contributions of women to historic events and developments is to highlight the importance of gender diversity in all fields and reduce the inequalities in terms of pay, acknowledgments and access to various resources for personal growth. It is programmed so that it coincides with the International Women’s Day on March 8.
In recent years, March is also dedicated to intersectionality. The organizations and individuals participating in awareness campaigns recognize that historically, there has also been a gap between women from different walks of life. Their work now focuses on closing this gap by creating content that specifically addresses women from various ethnic, national, socio-economic and identity backgrounds. Many social media influencers have also taken up creating thematic content that recognizes the achievements of women, some even broadening the scope of the celebrations internationally beyond the three countries where March is officially recognized as Women’s History Month. There are also a lot of campaigns for women in STEM, owing to its lack of diversity. The NYUAD Engineering Division IDBE Committee also has upcoming events that will focus on what inclusion within STEM means and looks like.
In the proclamation of March as Women’s History Month by the White House, the issue of the constitutional rights of women’s bodily and health autonom was put at the center, in light of all of the legal changes implemented by various States in response to the overturning of . Many public figures from the U.S., including most notably singer Olivia Rodrigo, have also taken up awareness campaigns and charity work this March in the name of all affected by these changes.
Programming about Women’s History Month will continue until March 31, but many organizations pledge to continue highlighting the work of women all year round.
