The Arts Proxy Program (APP), now in its fifth iteration, was initiated in Fall 2020 by Daniel Rey, Class of 2020, to help students interested in the arts develop their presentation skills. The program offers a range of professional development workshops, including: CV, cover letter, artist statement, art residency, grant applications, portfolio building and review, and mock interviews with UAE-based art institutions.

Past participants shared their experience in the program in an exclusive interview with The Gazelle.

Marta Pienkosz, Class of 2024, created a series of abstract ink paintings called (dis)array, which feature unique compositions of algorithmically distorted rectangles for the final exhibition. She designed a special system for creating these paintings, similar to how an algorithm controls the appearance of underdrawings. Even though she carefully follows the process for each painting, the uneven distribution of paint and human error bring an element of unpredictability into the predetermined compositions. This reflects how people often fear the unnatural implications of their own creations, such as AI, which can create complex structures. The resulting artworks blend algorithmic randomness, geometric abstraction, and abstract expressionism, showcasing the unpredictable nature of technology and human creativity. Through the Arts Proxy Program, Marta not only received valuable feedback on her portfolio and artists statements from industry experts, but also had the opportunity to connect with other talented individuals who share her passion for pursuing a career in the arts.

Connie Cen, Class of 2024, shared that participating in the Arts Proxy Program has been a highly valuable experience. Despite being new to the creative field, the program has introduced her to a community of ambitious arts enthusiasts who have motivated her to explore her creativity further. Additionally, having the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of artists has been an inspiration for her, providing her with multiple viewpoints on curation and enhancing her understanding of the relationship between art and the healing process.

Insun Woo, Class of 2023, reflected that running the program for the past two semesters has been a great opportunity to connect with students in the arts and with various artists and arts professionals across the UAE’s art scene. For instance, this semester’s portfolio review workshop was conducted by Faisal Al Hassan, Head of 421, who provided generous feedback on the participants’ portfolios. It has also been amazing to keep in touch with NYUAD alumni who are doing amazing work across the UAE’s art scene, such as Daniel H. Rey, Tala Nassar, and Ethan Lee.

This semester, students majoring in Art History, Visual Arts, Interactive Media, Film and New Media, Creative Writing, Computer Science, and Psychology participated in the program. The culminating exhibition will take place at 421, May 4, 6-8 pm. Students are welcome to join in-person at the exhibition.
