Rafael Viñoly, the architect behind NYU Abu Dhabi’s campus, passed away on March 2 at the age of 78.
The news was shared by his son, Román Viñoly, who also wrote
an open letter for the website of his late father’s company, Viñoly Architects.
Many have expressed their condolences to the Viñoly family and their co-workers, including the
football team Manchester City, whose City Football Academy was designed by the late architect, and Princeton University, whose
stadium was also one of his projects.
NYUAD's Vice-Chancellor Mariët Westermann also paid tribute to the architect in an email shared with the larger NYUAD community. She highlighted Viñoly's dedication to educational institutions and his interest in the core values of NYUAD from its developmental stages.
Viñoly’s timeless designs leave a legacy of excellence and originality, which will carry on in the future.
