New York Campus Announces Commencement Speaker
New York University has officially announced its speaker for the university’s 187th Commencement Ceremony, to be held on May 22 in Yankee Stadium. Elizabeth Alexander, poet and president of The Andrew W. Mellon foundation based in New York City has been selected among many distinguished and honourable figures to address the graduates and guests.
On the selection of Ms. Alexander, NYU President Andrew Hamilton
said, “A woman whose poetry was chosen to set the tone for a new Presidential administration; a physician leading the battle against cancer; an award-winning playwright whose work has been among Broadway’s most indelible; a woman leading the preservation of the United States' cultural heritage; and a savior of his country’s patrimony.”
She will is also to receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree, honoris causa, at the ceremony. Other selected honorary degree recipients who are due to be honoured this year at the ceremony include Abdel Kader Haidara (archivist and director of the private library Mamma Haidara of Timbuktu); Carla Diane Hayden (Librarian of Congress), Douglas R. Lowy (deputy director of the National Cancer Institute), and Terrence McNally (Tony Award-winning playwright.)
Latino Night
Latino Night, held on April 11 at the NYU Abu Dhabi Marketplace, was a colorful fiesta full of diverse booths and vibrant food. Partygoers danced the night away to energetic tunes, as volunteers put on a myriad of performances. Participants also had the chance to partake in activities such as using paint to add to a portrait of the unibrowed icon of Mexican art, Frida Kahlo, which ended up covered in multicolored flowers. Latino cuisine was also a central feature throughout the whole event with all being able to savor authentic candies from Mexico City in flavors such as Spicy Corn and Mango.
Newly Elected Student Government Executive Board Announced
The much anticipated results of the recent voting that took place for the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 Student Government were announced. Leading the Student Government Executive Board as the next Student Body President is Hafsa Ahmed, Class of 2020. The elected class representatives are: Ayham Adaw, Class of 2022, Teodora Hristovska, Class of 2021, Matea Kocevska, Class of 2020.
