The UAE’s Ancient History
The UAE’s territory has been inhabited by humans for longer than some might guess, at least 6,500 years according to an archeological dig at Marwah Island. Found in 1990, the full extent of the site was only examined in the last few years. The Stone Age village displays the oldest known pieces of decorative art discovered in the UAE. The site gives a view into a time when the region was a cooler, greener place and its people were permanent settlers, rather than nomadic tribes. Not quite as old, Ed-Dur, a 2000-year-old site in Umm Al Quwain yielded 15 tombs with bronze statues, pottery and jewelry earlier this week. Coins known as Arab Alexanders, a currency previously used in the eastern Arabia Peninsula, were found alongside minting equipment. These are only the most recent discoveries at the Ed-Dur, which was discovered in 1973. 500 tombs were found in 2015, “all of them were built beside the houses because they believed that life and life after death are one and indivisible,” said Alia Al Ghafli, Director General of the Umm Al Quwain department of Tourism and Antiquities, to The National
Our Way or the Highway
The Louvre Abu Dhabi has launched their second highway gallery, promoting the museum. Enlarged versions of artworks and historical pieces that can be found in the Louvre Abu Dhabi are lined up alongside Sheikh Zayed Highway. The pieces include Guanyin, Bodhisattva of Compassion, Édouard Manet's The Bohemian, and a steel Turban helmet from Ottoman Turkey. Tuning into Radio 1 FM (100.5FM), Classic FM (91.6 FM) and Emarat FM (95.8 FM), while approaching any of the pieces will play a 30 second audio clip explaining the piece.
